The European Institute for Innovation Supporting Energy Innovations

The European Institute for Innovation Supporting Energy Innovations

The European Institute for Innovation (EIfI) is a partner in the EU funded FREED Project, established to support the development of innovation in energy technologies currently unavailable within the Northern Periphery & Artic regions, which runs until the end of 2018. This will be achieved by selecting companies, SME’s or start-ups, collaborating with private finance to bring technology transfer of intellectual property to create products and bringing them to market.

Recently the FREED Project invited applications from companies, SME’s or start-ups to develop innovative energy technologies. Aimed at businesses that are currently active in the Energy Technology sector at technology readiness level 6 or below, FREED offered financial support to develop and take innovative energy technologies to commercialisation. A sum of €30,000 was made available to the successful applicant, Unicorn Engineering, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, Germany as well as in-kind support of incubation capabilities, market access and unique access to private investment from the EIfI.

The EIfI scanned the Northern Periphery & Artic regions landscape on the following energy thematic areas:

  • Intelligent grid (IoT): including but not restricted to smart illumination; 5G solutions; electrical and heat distribution networks; intelligent energy systems; remotely controllable loads; distributed grid management; power electronics; “virtual” power stations; demand side & control system management; upgraded power grid; solutions for zero-emission zones in smart cities; data analysis, integrated computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS), decentralised and off-grid solutions

  • Energy storage: including but not restricted to advanced battery technology; energy for transport sector; thermal energy storage, hydrogen energy storage; hybrid energy storage systems, domestic and commercial scale heat recovery systems; small scale solar PV with integrated battery storage, decentralised and off-grid solutions

  • Smart and efficient buildings and environment: including but not restricted to ultra-energy efficient building management solutions and services; BMS and metering technologies; ICT solutions to encourage monitoring; smart HVAC linked to renewable energy; smart temp and humidity control for built heritage sites; energy cost reduction technology for water treatment

  • Renewable energies: including but not restricted to solar PV, anaerobic digestion, bioenergy and related supply chains incl. biomass CHP; marine and hydro renewable energy; 2nd generation biofuels; technology to increase usage of on-site renewables; advanced heat pumps, solar thermal, decentralised and off-grid solutions

A condition of being awarded the contract was that the technology development and the commercial development of the output must take place in the Northern Periphery and Arctic region, as defined by the European Union Interreg Programme.

The FREED Project has seven full-partners from across and outside the NPA region:

  • University of Oulu from Finland
  • South-West College from Northern Ireland
  • Western Development Commission from Ireland
  • Green Angel Syndicate from Scotland
  • Narvik Science Park from Norway
  • Limerick Institute of Technology from Ireland
  • European Institute for Innovation from Germany

The European Institute for Innovation (EIfI) is an applied science organisation supporting the adaptions of regions to respond to the fast pace of development, thus making them more competitive. The EIfI through its national, regional and transnational work acts as a stimulator for economic activity with the purpose of creating new employment and business opportunities that meet the demands and desires of communities and its people. The EifI operational team manages the delivery of project work and programmes working in partnership with national/EU agencies, learning institutions, the private sector and people – the so called “Quadruple Helix” The European Institute for Innovation (EIfI) have successfully worked on numerous European funded projects, as well as with national projects. Our experienced staff include researchers, educationalists, industrialists and IT specialists. Our activities are mainly concentrated in the following directions: Energy, Education, Resource Efficiency & ICT.

Winning Tender Unicorn Engineering

Unicorn Engineering GmbH is the legal succession of the ropa development GmbH and was originally founded in 2002. The engineering company develops ground-breaking storage and electrical engine systems, as well as charging facility elements for the electrical technology market. The development spectrum of the company encompasses the mechanical, electrical, as well as the software and hardware elements. The Unicorn Engineering GmbH performs the development work beginning with the first idea up to the production of functioning prototypes. The end products however, are produced by our industrialization partners. Our aim is to place standardized, versatile products in the market, containing novel communication systems.

Wining Innovation & Concept

The NPA region is characterised by its rugged landscape and insular characteristics. As there are inhabitants in more remote regions it demands innovative and economical proven concepts to guarantee a nationwide energy supply in those countries. One way to achieve this is a decentralised electricity generation concept using renewable energy resources, combined with cost-effective energy storage. The EnergyTube concept offers a versatile, modular battery system for energy storage with the option of a user-defined scalability that even can be adjusted in the long term. With the planned standardization process it provides the possibility to use the EnergyTube in addition, in a variety of mobile applications. With this approach energy can be stored and used on demand in a flexible manner. The EnergyTube system applies to different themes of the category 1 (intelligent grid), as well as category 2 (energy storage) in the FREED project.
